This review is for the Martha & Marley Spoon Family Plan with 4 meals per week/box which costs $131.20 which breaks down to $8.20 per serving for 16 servings.

All of the ingredients arrive in a large cardboard box that’s lined with insulation and filled with icepacks to keep everything cool.

The first thing you’ll see once you open your box are the recipe cards and a small booklet that contains information on Martha & Marley Spoon.

The recipe cards have a large picture on front of the finished dish along with how long it takes to make the recipe and a short summary. The reverse side of each recipe card tells you all of the ingredients that are provided, ingredients you need to provide, tools needed, allergens, nutrition facts, and 6 easy to follow steps to make the recipe. FYI: Full ingredient lists for each recipe can be found online at the Martha & Marley Spoon website- you can check out the list when choosing your recipes in case you have food allergies or sensitivities. We have food allergies in our house so being able to see every single recipe is really helpful in choosing dishes everyone in our house can enjoy!

The booklet also lists the “kitchen basics” that may be required in the recipes. You can check the ingredients for your recipes when you choose them to see if they require you provide anything. These kitchen basics include simple ingredients like milk, flour, salt, and butter.

All of the dry ingredients are packaged in brown paper bags and labeled with the recipe name which makes it easy to figure out which ingredients go with which recipe. All of the cold ingredients (meats/cheeses) are under the bags in the box and sandwiched between ice packs.

Now, let’s talk about each recipe I cooked for this box! FYI: I chose all of the recipes in this box. Each week you’ll get a new menu from which you can choose your recipes or you can go with the recommended recipes already chosen for you based on your food preferences. Like I mentioned earlier, we have food allergies so I always review the ingredients in the recipes and pick accordingly.

Recipe #1: Grilled Chicken Sausage Parm with Chopped Italian Salad

Here’s the recipe card with the six steps to make the recipe. Something that is really helpful is that all of the ingredient names in each step are in bold print so I can quickly see what’s needed in that step. I definitely agree with the suggestion to “read the entire recipe through before starting to cook”-  it will familiarize you with the recipe and save you from making a mistake and wasting time!

All of the ingredients included to make this recipe. I had to provide olive oil, salt, pepper, and vinegar.

…and here’s a few pictures I took during preparation of this recipe:

Prepare the marinara sauce

Chop up the fresh mozzarella and parmesan cheese

Slice up the tomatoes, romaine, cilantro, and pepperoncini for the salad

Toss the salad with oil and vinegar, salt and pepper

Make the chicken sausage patties

The finished grilled patties

..and the finished dish!

I would have never thought to use chicken sausage to make chicken parmesan nonetheless to grill it and put it on a ciabatta bun so this was a fun take on a classic dish. This dish was pretty casual so we made it for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The chicken sausage was grilled and topped with a homemade garlic-infused marinara sauce and fresh melty mozzarella cheese. We drizzled the ciabatta buns with olive oil and toasted them on the grill as well. It was so good- with a nice mix of Italian spices. The side was a salad made of pepperoncini, roma tomatoes, and romaine lettuce topped with parmesan cheese and tossed in a simple vinagrette made with fresh garlic, white wine vinegar, and olive oil.

Recipe #2: Chile Rubbed Steak Tacos with Salsa Verde & Creamy Slaw

This grilled steak taco recipe was taken from Martha Stewart’s grilling cookbook!

Here’s the recipe card with all of the info.

….and all of the ingredients included for this recipe. I had to provide olive oil, salt, pepper, and sugar so very few basic ingredients not in the box that I’d have around anyway.

Now, let’s take a peek at some prep pics and the finished product!

Marinate the steak with Mexican chili powder

Chop up the tomatillos and onion

Make the creamy slaw

Grill the veggies and steak

The finished dish!

We frequently make tacos for dinner but not often steak tacos and definitely not with slaw so this was new and exciting to try! Even my picky son ate this dish which was shocking considering it included cabbage and tomatoes!! He’s definitely more open to trying new foods when we are cooking food box recipes- they make dinner fun again. Anyhow- we grilled all of the veggies and the Mexican chili powder marinated steak so everything had a delicious grilled flavor- very Summer-timey! The steak was tender and topped with salsa verde which is a mix of tomatillos (green tomatoes), onion, cilantro, jalapeno and a little salt and sugar. Also atop the tacos is a creamy (and crunchy!) slaw- a mix of sour cream, shredded cabbage blend and salt/pepper. Fresh, simple, and delicious!

Recipe #3: Sweet & Sour Chicken with Noodles, Snap Peas & Ginger

The recipe card for this thai-inspired dish

Here’s all of the provided ingredients. I had to provide white wine vinegar, vegetable oil, salt, and pepper

Now, let’s check out some prep pics!

For this dish, we added asparagus and mushrooms since we had them in the fridge and didn’t want them to go bad since we were on a full week of food box cooking.

Also- for this recipe, Martha & Marley Spoon sent us snow peas to substitute the sugar snap peas which they said were not available due to a supplier issue. They worked great with this recipe taste-wise so no complaints!

Make stir-fry sweet & sour sauce with chili sauce, tamari, fresh ginger, and vinegar

Soak the noodles- they basically soaked for the duration of our prep time. We then had to re-rinse them and drain prior to cooking.

Mix the veggies, noodles, and chicken with the sauce. This dish only required one pan which was nice for easy clean up!

..and the finished recipe!

This was a family favorite in our house! The sweet and sour sauce (or should I say sweet & savory) with the heat from the spice was perfectly balanced, the rice noodles were soft and oh-so-good tossed with the sauce and veggies. I love fresh ginger so I really like that it was included in this recipe because that is what made this dish really fresh-tasting.

Recipe #4: Grass-Fed Cheeseburger with Poblano & Corn Salad

The recipe card

All of the ingredients in the box for this recipe. I provided vegetable oil, salt, pepper, and ketchup.

Now for the preparation pics!

Chop up the red onions, poblano peppers, and lime

Grill the veggies (and later the burgers!)

Make the salad with cilantro, grilled corn, onions, and poblano peppers. Add lime juice, oil, salt, and pepper to taste.

The grilled burgers. My son wanted American cheese instead of the sharp cheddar so that’s what he got.

..and here’s the plated recipe!

This was another seasonally-appropriate grilled dish that was a hit- while the burgers were good, they were just burgers with cheese (which we make plenty of), the star of this recipe was definitely the grilled corn salad. The blend of grilled onions, corn, and poblano peppers with the cilantro was a scrumptious mix of spicy and fresh grilled goodness- a real taste of Summer! I am going to replicate the corn salad recipe since I enjoyed it so much and it was quick and easy to make!

Verdict:

Overall, my family and I loved the recipes in this Martha & Marley Spoon box. Cooking the recipes was enjoyable (it gives me and my husband a little extra quality time together!) and easy. We made the majority of these during the busy work-week and found they didn’t take any longer than we usually spending cooking so it didn’t seem time consuming- just a little more labor intensive with chopping up all the veggies and mixing sauces. The end results were definitely worth the extra effort! This box which is for 4 people for 4 recipes (16 servings) was $131.20 which breaks down to $8.20 per serving which is less than some of the other food boxes which are usually around the $10 per serving mark. For me personally, food boxes are worth the cost because of the time I save figuring out what to cook and shopping for ingredients. Everything is delivered to my door on my schedule and the delicious recipes make dinnertime fun and exciting!
